The Historical African Martial Arts Association (HAMAA) is founded upon the principles of research, respect, and reverence for the history and cultures that are the subject of study and practice.

HAMAA is dedicated to the research, preservation, restoration, and propagation of the martial disciplines of Africa and its global diaspora community. This is achieved through academic research, experimental archaeology, and building a global community of practitioners, historians, and enthusiasts.

Like your average North American, I enjoy media of all kinds, from movies to music, videogames and everything in between. Over the years I have noticed things here and there, but didn’t realize until later what it was or where it came from. I find it interesting that so much stuff from the HAMAA community these small details can go unnoticed. So today I will show and tell you about 5 pieces I have found throughout the years that will make you take a second look.

Updates on The Mamluk Project

In the fall of 2018, the HAMA Association launched a Kickstarter to raise the funds necessary to translate one of the most comprehensive sources on Historical African Martial Arts: “Kitāb al-makhzūn jāmiʻ al-funūn”, which loosely translates to “The Stock and Collector of the Arts”. With the help of over 300 donors, we met our goal to finance the project. Come with us on a journey of discovery as we bring this ancient text into the modern world.
